Chiwetel Ejiofor Could Play Baron Mordo In Doctor Strange

And with that, Marvel has cast every talented actor in Hollywood.

Months ago – five, to be exact – it was reported that Chiwetel Ejiofor was nearing a deal to be in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, where he would possibly play The Ancient One. That didn’t come to pass, as Ejiofor never signed on to the film, and Tilda Swinton was eventually cast as The Ancient One. But now there is a new report from Deadline that claims Ejiofor is playing Baron Mordo in the film (and that he’s “rumored to be joining the film,” but hey, “Chiwetel Ejiofor Joins Doctor Strange” is a better headline).

If, like me, you know nothing about the character of Doctor Strange, then you probably know even less about Baron Mordo. Evidently, this Mordo guy is a baddie in the comics, but he reportedly won’t be a “completely villainous character” in the film, instead being a composite of different characters from the Doctor Strange comics. I’m glad to hear Chiwetel Ejiofor might not be the villain of Doctor Strange, because Marvel has a tradition of casting great, distinguished actors as their movies’ villains and giving them little to do. But even if one tradition is broken, another appears to be starting, as Baron Mordo is coming after Baron von Strucker in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War. Maybe Marvel is pulling a “John Harrison” on us and Corey Stall is actually playing Baron Yellowjacket in next month’s Ant-Man.

If Ejiofor joins, he’ll be only the third Doctor Strange cast member that’s been announced. Since filming isn’t far off, we should start seeing more “[Actor] Rumored For Doctor Strange” articles, followed by “[Actor] In Talks For Doctor Strange” articles, and maybe even “[Actor] Signs On For Doctor Strange” articles. With all that, who needs the movie!

Even so, Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4, 2016.
