The Pineapple Incident Explained: Be Underwhelmed By The Answer To Another Big How I Met Your Mother Mystery
It’s been close to six months since How I Met Your Mother concluded and…yeah, I’m still sore as hell about the finale. I wouldn’t say that it goes as far as tainting my enjoyment of the entire series, but there are certain episodes I’ll watch on syndication that now just rub me the wrong way when I think about what it ultimately led to. Things like the time Ted danced to make it rain for Robin in “Come On” or when Barney proposed to Robin in “The Final Page” are soured by the events of the finale for sure, but thankfully this taint doesn’t spread to ever single great episode of the show. There’s still episodes of this series that work as just standalone little stories outside of the main HIMYM canon, and episodes that I can still watch to this day without the disappointment of the endgame giving me a bitter taste in my mouth.
But one of the best of those standalone episodes, “The Pineapple Incident,” has just been retroactively ruined via a brand new deleted scene from the series. A deleted scene that, yes, answers the question that plagued fans for so long: what was the whole Pineapple thing about? For those who need reminding, “The Pineapple Incident” told the story of one night in which Ted goes on a drunken binge, forgets most of it, and is left with a women in his bed that the doesn’t really know, and a pineapple on his nightstand. By the end of the episode the identity of the women in revealed, but the whole pineapple thing remained a mystery. Until now, sadly.
Buzzfeed has the exclusive on the deleted scene, which will assumingly be a part of the big How I Met Your Mother series box set hitting stores in a mere 24 hours. The article in question is of course put together with a bunch of fucking gifs, because Buzzfeed is an atrocity. Unfortunately the atrocity is the only way you can watch this video, as Buzzfeed doesn’t allow embeds. So you’re going to have to go over there to watch the scene…yeah, I’m sorry. Honestly, you might just be better off not watching the scene. The brief explanation itself should be enough to disappoint you: it was The Captain’s pineapple the whole time, and Ted stole it the night he was drunk. Yup, there it is — the payoff. Sigh.
So yeah, on the bright side, at least this wasn’t actually in the show itself, and was instead pushed to the side as a “deleted” scene. But though Carter Bays and Craig Thomas had the common sense this time around to take the scene out of the show, that doesn’t change the fact that they wrote the conclusion to the mystery, and thought this could actually be seen as a strong enough payoff to an eight season long mystery. They might have balked at the end, but this scene still exists, and will be what I think about whenever I watch that wonderful episode again. Even after its over, this show is finding ways to tarnish its legacy.
Also attached to the complete series set will be an “alternate ending” for the show, one that I assume Bays and Craig hope will make people happier this time around. But, once again, just because they wrote another version doesn’t change the existence of this version. Just ask Lost’s Epilogue. Oh wait, you can’t, because no one cared about that show by the time it came out.
