Comedy Bang! Bang!: “Craig Robinson Wears a Bordeaux Button Down & Dark Jeans” Review
If the first episode of Comedy Bang! Bang!’s third season was a smorgasbord of jokes, the second episode, “Craig Robinson Wears a Bordeaux Button Down & Dark Jeans,” was more like a light dinner. Not that there is anything wrong with a light dinner, or this episode. Both are enjoyable and low-key, even with the knowledge that something bigger and better is possible.
Craig Robinson seemed like an ideal guest for Comedy Bang! Bang!, as he has frequently played a calm voice of reason in storms of crazy. Admittedly, his appearance was underwhelming, or at least his interview was. Though Robinson’s underplayed delivery works well in ensemble based shows and movies like The Office and This is the End, it wasn’t as rewarding in a one on one. He was still funny – his repeated reaction shots throughout the episode were a highlight – but he was overshadowed by the rest of this episode.
The other parts of this episode, including Reggie’s space adventure and the comedic duo played by Bob Odenkirk and Tim Robinson, were good, though each had a moment of greatness. For Reggie’s segment, it was the juxtaposition of dying aliens (and a dying baby!) with Reggie triumphantly playing music. And for Odenkirk and Robinson, it was their brief, profane comedic routine (though their segment also had a great ending). The highlight of the episode was “A Tear Down,” a reverse-Extreme Home Makeover segment that didn’t involve rebuilding what was torn down. It had most of the episode’s biggest laughs – my favorite being Scott’s incessant use of the “man’s grave” joke – and the ending worked despite being forecast throughout the sketch.
When looking at “Craig Robinson Wears a Bordeaux Button Down & Dark Jeans” compared to last week’s episode and even last season, it falls a little short. However, though Comedy Bang! Bang! can do better than this, this wasn’t bad. This was a perfectly enjoyable episode that had some great moments. Very few shows could kill innocent alien babies and have it be considered a low-key episode, but very few shows are like Comedy Bang! Bang!
