Okay, Naughty Dog Says They Are CONSIDERING a Last of Us Sequel, But That Proves Nothing!

A couple of weeks ago, I commented on a rumor circulating through the internet that Naughty Dog was currently working on The Last of Us 2, and was aiming to release the game sometime in 2015.  I called bullshit on the rumor the moment I heard it, just because the idea of Naughty Dog ALREADY working on the game was insane considering everything else they currently are working on (The Last of Us DLC “Left Behind” and the new Uncharted game, just to name a few).  But now we’ve heard straight from the source, and Naughty Dog is apparently considering its next move after The Last of Us—which, yes, could potentially be The Last of Us 2.

The Last of Us writer and creative director Neil Druckmann was speaking to Eurogamer about the “Left Behind” DLC when he talked up the possibilites of a second Last of Us game or, more specifically, what Naughty Dog would move on to now that DLC work on the first game had concluded.  According to him:

“We just wrapped up Left Behind, and Bruce Straley, the game director, and I have been doing this for over four years now. So it’s just time for a break, and to recharge the batteries.  We have started brainstorming some stuff. To be honest, some of them are sequel ideas, and some of them are brand new IP – we’ve spent the last few weeks brainstorming new IP. So we have to get some good steps and see… It’s kind of like how we approached Left Behind. Can we tell people a story that’s really worth telling, and that’s not repeating itself? And if we can’t, where can we get inspired – what is something that’s really going to challenge us, and push storytelling in this medium forward?”

So yes, the possibility is out there that The Last of Us could get a sequel one of these days.  But since Druckmann didn’t come out and say “The Last of Us 2 is in development and coming out next year,” I still think that rumor is crap.

As for the sequel prospects of the game, I’ll repeat what I’m sure I’ve already said before: meh.  I love The Last of Us and the world Naughty Dog created for it, but I’m not sure it’s the kind of game that screams sequel, ESPECIALLY if it decides to just continue the story of the two main characters.  I like the way it concluded the first time, and don’t particuarly need to see a continution on it.  Now another game in the same universe but with different characters?  That could work.  But between that and a new IP, I would probably go with a new IP.

Or Jak 4.  Come on Naughty Dog, stop teasing us already!
