This Christmas, two very different films opened against each other—the insane, drug fueled, and sexually explicit comedy from Martin Scorsese that was The Wolf of Wall Street, and the pedestrian, desperate, and bland as hell “comedy” Grudge Match starring Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro. Apples and oranges the two films, but a decade ago, it would have been totally different. Scorsese golden boy Robert De Niro would be headlining Wolf of Wall Street, and everyone in the world would be talking about how terrific his performance was…rather than how sad it is for the man to take part in dreck like Grudge Match. Yes, the De Niro/Scorsese partnership has delivered some of the best films of the modern era, and though Scorsese “moved away” from De Niro in the early 2000’s once he found new acting partner Leonardo DiCaprio. But if De Niro is to be believed, the duo are getting back together to do something that they are certainly pros at—making a gangster film together. I ruminate on the infinite possibilities right after the break.
The report comes from Bang! Showbiz and, in De Niro fashion, his statement is short and sweet:
“We have another gangster film (which) we’re going to (make) and it’s a very interesting one. I’m looking forward to it.”
INTERESTING you say? Ooooooooooh!
First things first, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard word of the two re-teaming to do a film together. The most likely culprit is The Irishman, the story of Irish mobster Frank Sheeran based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses from author Charles Brandt. That one’s rumored to involved Al Pacino and Joe Pesci (Pesci!) as well, and has been kicking around for a few years now. Another possibility is the long in development Sinatra, which would have De Niro playing the titular singer and Al Pacino once again at his side as Dean Martin. But since De Niro said this would be a gangster film, I don’t think that’s the one the actor is referring to.
Still, just the idea of the two reteaming for the first time since 1995’s Casino is an exciting prospect, no? De Niro has been costing for years now, and could really use the hands of Scorsese again to kind of get him back on track. Also, I would be VERY surprised if this gangster film didn’t include a role for Leonardo DiCaprio as well…which would make for an awesome blending of old and new for Scorsese in my mind. And following his absolutely incredible performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, seeing him and De Niro go toe to toe could be pretty fun indeed.
But all that’s mere speculation on my part. The only thing we really know for now is that De Niro and Scorsese plan to work together in the future…who knows when that time will actually come though. Right now Scorsese is doing a documentary about Bill Clinton, and after that he’ll go do Silence with The Social Network’s Andrew Garfield. So it could be a while until we see this actually come to fruition. Still, worth getting excited about, no?
