These days, Vin Diesel has been spending his free time from counting his Fast & Furious/The Boiler Room money teasing fans on his Facebook page about one of his newest gigs, playing a character in an unknown Marvel movie. He’s been talking up the projects for weeks now, but refusing to tell people just what the role was. This of course sent the Geek-O-Sphere in a frenzy, with much speculation being left behind in its wake. Could he be the big Marvel Universe baddie Thanos? The deep voiced superhero and Avengers alum The Vision? The rocket wielding raccoon named…well, Rocket Raccoon? Apparently all these predictions were incorrect…though it seems incredibly likely that Diesel will indeed be playing a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He’ll be playing the tree. Yes…the tree.
In all seriousness, the rumor first broke out when Diesel posted the below picture on his Facebook page...
Yeah, always the subtle one that Vin Diesel. Deadline later went on to confirm the story, saying the actor was in negotiations to join the cast (though, after all the clear nerd-gasming from Diesel, something tells me he won’t be turning it down). Now I’m sure for some this might come as sort of a let down considering how un-major the role really is (Groot only really says “I Am Groot” throughout the entire film), and even I can admit it’s a bit of a shame for Diesel to have such a low key role. But hey, one of his best roles to this day is that of The Iron Giant, and he didn’t have to much to say then either. So well it would have been cool to see Dom join The Avengers, I’m still happy to see him involved in the Marvel family some way. As non-bombastic as Diesel might be as an actor, there’s just something you got to love about his cheesy as hell performances. He truly is the Schwarzenegger of his day, isn’t he?
With Diesel cast as Groot, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and Dave Bautista as Drax The Destroyer, the only member of the main Guardians who hasn’t been cast is Rocket Raccoon. I’m still gunning for Jason Statham, but what about the rest of you? Who do you want to see as the gun tooting coon? And as a quick sidenote, boy is the cast for this film pretty great. That’s enough to see the film already.
Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters August 1, 2014.
