On The Next Arrested Development: Mitch Hurwitz Promises To Ditch The “Anthology” Style And Bring The Entire Cast Back Together Again

Overall, I would say reactions to Arrested Development Season 4 were pretty positive.  Yeah there were some detractors, but most found a lot to love and only a few things to hate.  One of the few complaints that a lot of people had was the fact that, throughout most of the season, the cast was disjointed.  There were a lot of reasons for this (mostly budgetary and scheduling ones), but Mitch Hurwitz and team found a way to circumvent this issue with a more character based episode format.  And though I enjoyed mixing it up a bit, even I can admit that having the cast so segmented put a strain on the comedic aspects of the season.  So in that case, this news should come as a relief to most—be it another season or a movie, Mitch Hurwitz promises that the entire cast will be back together again for the new Arrested Development.

Chortle spoke to Hurwitz about his plans for the next Arrested Development, to which Hurwitz had the following response:

I kinda go back and forth between [a movie] and a series. But here’s the most important thing, whatever we do, I want to get the cast all together and not do another anthology thing, and that’s why I keep thinking about kicking off with a special or a three-part show and then going into a series.

If you’re wondering why Hurwitz used the term “series” instead of “season,” it’s because Chortle is a British website.  They’re so backwards over there!  Or are we backwards here?  Damn it English, why can’t you be consistent!

Anyways, this news has me psyched.  Even though I dug the format of Season 4, I don’t think it would hold up very well past one span of episodes.  Besides, the new format accomplished what it set up to do—explain what the family did with their lives separate from one another.  With them all together again and caught up to the present, hopefully things will go back to the way they once were.  Now whether it turns out to be a movie or new season is anyone’s guess…though at this point, I’m going to bet on another season.  But if Hurtwitz manages to do the impossible and get all these people together again for a string of multiple episodes, lord knows I’ll be happy.  We’ll see if this dream comes into fruition eventually.
