Rumor Mill: Dwayne Johnson Will Battle Arnold Schwarzenegger In A 50’s Set Terminator 5, Cause That Sounds Like Something The Internet Would Enjoy

When it comes to pure action movie charisma, is there any actor out there right now who could top Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson?  He’s had a pretty incredible year thus far with a scene stealing turn in Pain and Gain, and being franchise redemption for TWO separate franchises in G.I Joe: Retaliation and Fast and Furious 6.  He also did Snitch, which was a movie.  Yes, pretty much no one can match up to Dwayne Johnson when it comes to action movie talent…except maybe the legend that is Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Hell, Dwayne Johnson has also been called the Schwarzenegger of our time, and Arnold’s cameo in The Rundown almost literally stated this.  But despite that, we have yet to see the two actually duke it out on film before.  But that might be changing pretty soon, as a new rumor hitting the net claims that Dwayne Johnson could be playing the villain in the next iteration of one of Arnold’s most well known franchises—Terminator 5.

The scoop comes courtesy of Examiner, who claim a source close to Annapurna Films (the current owner of the rights) has leaked that Dwayne Johnson is up for a role in Terminator 5, which just kickstarted its development when Arnold Schwarzenegger was confirmed to be on board.  And Johnson just won’t be playing any role—he’d be playing the villain, sent back in time to the 40’s or 50’s to kill Sarah Connor’s parents.  So where would Arnold factor in?  Well, he’d be playing a heroic figure close to the Connor’s “whose ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s with antiquated weaponry by today’s standards ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that was eventually sent to 1984 when Sarah Connor was first targeted for termination.”  Ah, full circle?

So on the Legit Scale of Rumorocity, is this believable?  Eh…I’d take it with a grain of salt.  Examiner articles aren’t exactly the most reliable of sources to get quality scoops from, as I actually can’t remember ever getting a legitimate rumor out of them.  Futhermore, I’m not sure the people involved would really want to pursue a prequel—well it would address the whole “Why is the Terminator an old man?” issue, making a prequel of a time traveling franchise like Terminator can get very confusing very fast.  But since there’s really little you could do with this franchise with Schwarzenegger back, I guess it could do.

After-School All-Stars

Now pairing The Rock and Arnold as enemies, on the other hand, would be freaking awesome.  I love both actors, and would love to see them go toe to toe in a Terminator film.  The Rock as a Terminator could be a little odd since the actor’s at his best when he’s at his most charismatic, but I guess stuff like Walking Tall and The Rundown shows he can be pretty cool as a silent badass too.  Well I’m not sure Examiner’s sources are completely legit (hell, the sources themselves said they were speculating in parts), The Rock joining the series seems too tantalizing to pass up.  We’ll see if it comes to fruition.
