The New Jack the Giant Killer Trailer Does Not Foretell Strong Times For Director Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer is such a hit and miss director, to the point where I wonder if he’s even a good one.  Well The Usual Suspects is a masterpiece, the film’s success is mostly due to its amazing script.  Apt Pupil was meh, and the first X-Men was just decent.  But X-Men 2 was great, and still remains one of the best comic book movies ever made.  But after X-Men 2, Singer took a turn for the worst, delivering a bunch of mediocre films like Superman Returns and Valkyrie.  And next March, he’ll be back in theaters with Jack the Giant Killer.  Is it any better than his recent efforts.  Sadly…no, not really.

To be fair, the trailer isn’t all terrible.  Ewan McGregor in particular looks like he’s having a fun time, and I’m happy that the film is being somewhat tongue in cheek with its pretty ridiculous subject material. Better than say Oz: The Great and Powerful and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters at least.  But still, I wouldn’t quite call this a GREAT trailer.  The CGI looks lackluster, border lining on the terrible.  And the plot is nothing special, despite the film’s attempt to make it appear as such.  Still, I guess it could be fun in a Mirror, Mirror disaster sort of fashion.  But from Bryan Singer, I expect a little more than that.  It’s this kind of stuff that makes me worried for First Class 2…but that’s a topic for another day.  Anyways, here’s the trailer:

And here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult) into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend–and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Jack will slay giants (I imagine) on March 1, 2013.
