Joss Whedon Casts Two Nerds with Two Unknowns in ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

You know what one of the most annoying aspects of writing about the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show is?  The annoying title.  Those periods can really get to you.  But whatever the case, Whedon and company have added to more cast members to the S.H.I.E.L.D. playing pivotal (and very Joss Whedon) sounding roles.  But contrary to what you might thought would happen, Whedon has summoned up to unknowns to take the roles, rather than anyone from his current stable of actors.  Find out who he picked and what characters they will be playing after the break.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story this time around, as the two geekiest roles in the S.H.I.E.L.D pilot have finally been cast by Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker.  This is how the pair were described a few months ago:

“These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.”

But of course with the casting news, a few more details have been revealed.  Henstridge will play “science whiz Agent Gemma Simmons,” as De Castecker gets the role of Agent Leo Fitz, the resident techy of the show.  Honestly I’ve never even heard of these two actors, but at least their characters sound good in that oh-so-Whedony way.  And De Castecker has a pretty badass last name…which obviously makes him the greatest actor on the planet.  Because that’s how that stuff works.

Henstridge and De Caestecker are joining the previously announced cast of Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Ming Na as “Agent Melinda May.”  The pilot will apparently be hitting cameras at the beginning of next year, and we’re not done with casting yet.  There’s still quite a few roles to fill, and hopefully we’ll get some Whedon alum on board to really spice things up.  We’ll keep you posted in the meantime.
