Confirmed: Agent Coulson Will Return for ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’, Either Through Science or Magic

Today at New York Comic Con, Marvel was on hand to make a pretty big announcement regarding the fate of one of their most famous side characters, a character who has truly captured the hearts of geeks everywhere.  Ah yes, everyone’s famous S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson is indeed on board for Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D show and, even though we have no idea how the hell that will work, his involvement alone is still enough to get us excited.

First of all, this post will reveal spoilers for The Avengers so…you know what, NO.  I don’t need to give you a spoiler warning.  I literally don’t know a single person who hasn’t seen The Avengers, so I’m just going to assume you have and call it a day.  Anyways, Agent Coulson totally died middway through The Avengers.  But today at New York Comic Con, Marvel confirmed (with actor Clark Gregg in hand) that the character will be returning for S.H.I.E.L.D, the TV show in development at ABC from Joss Whedon about (you guessed it!) the daily runnings and adventures of S.H.I.E.L.D.

When talking about the character’s return, Whedon (via video chat) explained that “There was never going to be a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show without Agent Phil Coulson.  He’s headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was.”  So with this in mind, you’re probably asking just how Coulson is set to return.  Well guess what?  We have no idea!

Honestly though, it’s no big deal how the character returns.  Comic books are notorious for having dead characters come back alive, and Marvel is no exception.  Hell, they could easily just say “he got better” and I would be a okay with it.  But there will probably be some cosmic, super complicated explanation going on the likes of which I can’t even imagine.  And if worse comes to worse, PREQUEL.  Still, I love Clark Gregg and Phil Coulson, so I’m more than happy that the character will be making his way onto the show.  Right now Clark Gregg is the only character cast for the series, although I imagine that will be changing any day now as the show gears up to start shooting its pilot.
